Trump Announces US Recognition of Venezuela’s Transitional Leadership

(MENAFN) The administration of the United States has announced that it has formally acknowledged the Venezuelan government that is currently in place, according to statements made by President Donald Trump. The US leader also highlighted a recently struck “deal” involving Caracas and its gold holdings.

After a forceful operation earlier this year that resulted in the apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Trump shifted his tone significantly regarding Venezuela. Maduro has subsequently been charged by US authorities with offences including narcoterrorism, cocaine trafficking, and violations relating to weapons — charges he firmly rejects.

In various public remarks, the US president has also made it clear that Washington intends to pursue influence over Venezuela’s substantial petroleum assets. Venezuela is known to possess the largest confirmed oil reserves worldwide, making up about one-fifth of what is known globally.

Delcy Rodriguez, who assumed leadership responsibilities in Venezuela following Maduro’s capture, initially stressed that external powers would not gain control over the country. In time, however, Rodriguez has signalled a willingness to adjust to US priorities, which includes allowing American firms into Venezuela’s oil industry and working jointly on security matters.

At a regional summit in Florida, Trump said: “I'm pleased to say that this week, we have formally recognized the Venezuelan government. We’ve actually legally recognized them.” According to official statements from the US Department of State, Washington and Caracas have “agreed to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations,” with the US insisting that its actions remain directed at enabling what it refers to as a “peaceful transition” towards a newly elected government.

Previously, Rodríguez had maintained that Maduro was still Venezuela’s rightful president. In remarks made in February, she described him as the “legitimate leader” and asserted that both he and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken into custody together, “are innocent.” At that time she also mentioned considering a visit to the US capital as part of the new cooperation being forged between the two countries.
