Washington Presses Brussels to Adjust Digital Regulations
Following discussions between the two sides’ trade envoys on the sidelines of the EU trade ministers’ assembly in Brussels, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick contended that the EU’s current regulatory setup for digital platforms imposes excessive obligations on firms — many of which are American.
“Our suggestion is that the European Union and their trade ministers deeply consider trying to analyze their digital rules, try to come away with a balance, not put them away, but find the balanced approach that works with us ... then we will, together with them, handle the steel and aluminum issues and bring that on together,” he stated.
At present, the US enforces a 50% tariff on steel and, since mid-August, has broadened this duty to encompass the metal content of 407 “derivative” products, covering goods such as motorcycles and refrigerators.
Additional products may be incorporated into the list next month.
The EU’s Digital Markets Act and its related regulatory measures set forth stringent obligations for major online platforms, with infringements resulting in substantial penalties — a strategy that Washington has repeatedly criticized. US authorities argue that the thresholds and enforcement methods unfairly impact American businesses.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic emphasized that the bloc’s digital framework is non-discriminatory.
Nonetheless, he recognized that digital oversight remains a key concern for Washington and will require continued negotiation.
