US, S. Korea ink deal on AI, bio, apace technologies
The agreement, called the Technology Prosperity Deal, was signed on Wednesday in the southeastern city of Gyeongju ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, according to reports. The signing coincided with US President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to South Korea, during which he held talks with President Lee Jae Myung.
"AI promises a new golden age of innovation by empowering individuals and supercharging progress across sectors like healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and education," stated the joint declaration issued by both nations.
Under the pact, Washington and Seoul agreed to collaborate on "developing pro-innovation AI policy frameworks" and "promoting the export of trusted AI technology stacks."
Ha Jung-woo, senior AI policy and future planning advisor to President Lee, emphasized the guiding principles behind the initiative, saying: “We have decided to put priority on direction over speed, trust over control, and cooperation over competition.”
Michael Kratsios, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the deal “reflects Washington's respect for South Korea as a technology partner of the US.”
The signing comes as South Korea prepares to host a high-level APEC meeting later this week, where discussions among the 21 member economies are already underway.
