South Korean President Approval Rating Jumps to to 65 Percent
The approval bump comes after Lee’s victory in a snap presidential election held in the wake of former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. Yoon was ousted following a failed attempt to declare martial law on December 3.
While 65% of respondents commended Lee for doing a “good job,” 23% voiced disapproval, data released by media showed.
Support for Lee’s ruling Democratic Party also rose, reaching 46%, while the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) continued to lose ground, dropping to 22%.
The poll was published shortly after Lee’s first official press conference on Thursday, where he laid out a sweeping domestic and foreign policy agenda. Speaking from the Blue House — which is undergoing renovations to become the new presidential office — Lee emphasized cross-party cooperation, economic recovery, and renewed diplomatic outreach, particularly toward North Korea.
In a major early move, Lee announced debt forgiveness for struggling small businesses — a decision welcomed amid ongoing trade talks with the U.S. over tariffs impacting the South Korean economy.
The conference, which lasted over two hours, marked a notable shift in presidential communication. Lee sat in close proximity to reporters, refraining from any direct mention of his impeached predecessor.
Still, political divisions were on display. That same day, PPP lawmakers walked out of parliament before the confirmation vote of Kim Min-seok as Lee’s chosen prime minister.
Lee also floated the idea of a shorter workweek — proposing a 4.5-day model — reflecting on his own hardships working in a factory during his youth.
“Initially, we didn’t rest at all for a whole month. Then they let us rest once a month… then twice a month… then once a week,” he recalled. “Such changes,” he added, “take time.”
