US Delays Next Round of US, Russia Talks
Earlier in the year, Washington and Moscow had engaged in two phases of senior-level negotiations.
The first round was convened on February 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while the second was held on February 27 in Istanbul, Türkiye.
These exchanges represented the most prominent face-to-face dialogue between the two powers since relations sharply declined due to the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.
Topics on the agenda included the reestablishment of embassy functions, simplifying visa procedures, deliberating over the Ukraine crisis, and considering future economic interaction once the hostilities cease.
The upcoming session was scheduled to be conducted in Moscow.
Nonetheless, Zakharova reported that the dialogue was suspended based on a decision made by American officials.
In a message shared on the Foreign Ministry’s official Telegram channel, she remarked, “As of today, the next meeting within the framework of bilateral consultations on eliminating ‘irritants’ to normalize the operation of diplomatic missions of both countries has been canceled at the initiative of the American negotiators.”
