US defense sends off extra military resources to Middle East

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Monday that he ordered the deployment of additional military resources to the Middle East over the weekend, citing increased threats in the region as tensions between Israel and Iran continue to rise.

"Over the weekend, I directed the deployment of additional capabilities to the United States Central Command Area of Responsibility," Hegseth posted on X. He emphasized that the move aims to bolster protection for American personnel. "Protecting US forces is our top priority," he said, adding that the deployment is intended to reinforce the country’s defensive stance.

According to a defense official cited by reports, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group was dispatched to the CENTCOM region to help secure US interests and personnel. Operations continue as well in the US European Command zone, with naval forces active in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell reiterated Washington’s commitment to safeguarding its military assets and regional interests. "We will protect American troops & our interests," he wrote on X.

The development coincided with US President Donald Trump’s early departure from the G7 summit in Canada, as the White House confirmed his return to Washington was prompted by the unfolding crisis in the Middle East.
