Washington delays diplomatic negotiations with Moscow
The talks, which were to take place in Moscow, follow two previous rounds held this year — the first on February 18 in Riyadh and the second on February 27 in Istanbul. These meetings marked a significant thaw in direct communication between the two sides after years of strained relations due to the Ukraine conflict.
The agenda for the talks included reviving embassy functions, improving visa processes, addressing the ongoing Ukraine situation, and considering prospects for economic cooperation in a post-conflict environment.
However, Zakharova revealed via the ministry’s Telegram channel that the planned meeting was scrapped at the request of the American side. “As of today, the next meeting within the framework of bilateral consultations on eliminating ‘irritants’ to normalize the operation of diplomatic missions of both countries has been canceled at the initiative of the American negotiators,” she stated.
She did not elaborate on the reasons provided by Washington but expressed hope that the current pause in dialogue “will not last too long.”
Since entering office earlier this year, President Donald Trump has shown interest in reviving US-Russia relations, which had deteriorated significantly under the previous administration of Biden. Moscow has responded positively to these overtures and has voiced willingness to move forward with normalization efforts.
