US Court Blocks Kennedy Center Shutdown Plan, Orders Removal of Trump Name
The rulings, issued by US District Judge Christopher Cooper, require Kennedy Center officials to remove Trump’s name from the institution within 14 days. The judge also barred the center from moving forward with a planned closure that was set to begin in July, according to reports.
The legal decisions arise from separate challenges to actions taken by the center’s leadership following controversy surrounding the Trump administration’s involvement with the institution.
One lawsuit was filed by Democratic lawmaker Joyce Beatty, who contested a board decision to rename the venue “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
Another case, brought by organizations focused on architecture and historic preservation, argued that any major renovation project should first undergo the required federal review procedures, including assessments related to historic preservation and environmental impacts, before construction activities can proceed.
