Authorities noted that the number “86” can carry slang meanings such as removing or getting rid of something, which contributed to differing interpretations of the post.
A senior Justice Department official said that threats against the president are treated as serious matters under federal law, stating, "Threatening the life of anybody is dangerous and potentially a crime," and emphasizing that such conduct would not be tolerated.
