Comey Faces New Indictment Over Social Media Post Seen as Trump Threat
The post in question, shared on Instagram in May, showed seashells arranged to resemble the numbers “86 47.” Critics claimed the arrangement could be understood as a coded reference implying harm toward Trump, the 47th US president. The number “86” is sometimes used in slang to mean removing or getting rid of something.
“Threatening the life of anybody is dangerous and potentially a crime," said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche at a Tuesday news conference. "Threatening the life of the president of the United States will never be tolerated by the Department of Justice."
According to the indictment, Comey faces two charges alleging that he knowingly and intentionally made threats to take the president’s life and cause bodily harm, as well as transmitting those threats through interstate communications.
Prosecutors argued that a reasonable viewer familiar with the context of the post could interpret the seashell arrangement as a serious expression of intent to harm the president.
The case centers on how the post is understood, with authorities stating that its meaning, in their view, goes beyond symbolic expression and could be perceived as a genuine threat.
