McConnell Urges Pentagon to Speed Up Congressionally Approved Ukraine Aid
In an opinion piece published in *The Washington Post*, McConnell rejected the idea that US public opinion is shifting away from support for Ukraine, stating instead that polling has consistently shown backing for continued assistance to Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.
He pointed out that Congress has already acted on this support through formal defense legislation, including provisions passed by Republican-led committees authorizing substantial annual funding for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative over the next several years. He also noted that appropriators approved full funding for fiscal year 2026 with strong bipartisan support.
However, McConnell argued that the allocated assistance has not yet been effectively implemented within the Department of Defense, claiming that the money is effectively stalled despite being approved.
He also expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of transparency from Pentagon officials regarding the delays. According to his account, congressional staff seeking clarification have not received adequate responses.
McConnell specifically referenced concerns about communication within the department’s policy leadership, stating, "When Senate appropriators have sought an explanation from the department’s policy shop, led by Undersecretary Elbridge Colby, they’ve been stonewalled. Our colleagues on armed services have also expressed growing frustration with the Defense Department’s inability to communicate,".
He framed continued support for Ukraine as a matter of strategic national interest rather than humanitarian assistance, describing it as a long-term investment in US security priorities.
Reports also note that Congress approved a large defense authorization package for fiscal year 2026 that includes hundreds of millions of dollars designated for Ukraine across 2026 and 2027 under the same assistance program.
