Trump says NATO is weak without US
During remarks to reporters, Trump was questioned about his commitment to keeping the US within NATO. He responded by highlighting what he described as improvements made to the alliance during his leadership. "I've had such a good relationship. I've made it so much better, so much stronger. It's so good. Now NATO is so much stronger," he said.
Although Trump expressed overall approval of NATO, he also criticized decisions made by the alliance prior to his presidency, distancing himself from what he described as earlier missteps. "I don't agree with a lot of the things they've done, but that was done before I got there. I think NATO has been good. Sometimes it's overrated ... but we have a strong NATO. When I came here, we had a weak NATO. ... If NATO doesn't have us, NATO is not very strong," he added.
Trump’s remarks underscored his view that while NATO remains an important military partnership, its effectiveness and influence are largely dependent on the role played by the United States.
